Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction)

Brief Introduction

A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when one of the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart becomes blocked, preventing oxygen-rich blood from reaching the heart muscle. This lack of blood flow damages the heart tissue. Without immediate medical treatment, a heart attack can be life-threatening.

Types of Heart Attack

1. STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction)

A severe heart attack caused by complete blockage of a coronary artery.

2. NSTEMI (Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction)

A heart attack caused by partial blockage of a coronary artery. Although less severe than STEMI, it still requires urgent medical care.

3. Silent Heart Attack (Silent MI)

A heart attack with few or no obvious symptoms. It is more common in people with diabetes and older adults.

Symptoms

  • Chest pain, pressure, tightness, heaviness, or burning sensation

  • Pain spreading to the left arm, shoulder, neck, back, or jaw

  • Shortness of breath

  • Excessive sweating or cold sweats

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Anxiety or a feeling of impending doom

  • Women may experience unusual fatigue, indigestion-like discomfort, back pain, or jaw pain instead of classic chest pain.

Causes

  • Atherosclerosis (cholesterol plaque buildup in arteries)

  • High blood pressure (Hypertension)

  • High LDL ("bad") cholesterol

  • Diabetes

  • Smoking and tobacco use

  • Chronic stress and lack of sleep

  • Obesity and sedentary lifestyle

  • Family history and genetic factors
