Brief Introduction

Creatinine is a waste product formed during the energy production process in muscles. The kidneys filter it from the blood and remove it from the body. When kidney function is reduced or the filtration capacity is impaired, creatinine levels in the blood begin to rise. Normally, creatinine levels are considered within the range of 0.7–1.3 mg/dl in men and 0.6–1.1 mg/dl in women.

Types

Increased creatinine is mainly classified into two types:

Intrinsic (kidney-related causes):
Inflammation of kidneys, nephritis, kidney failure, diabetic kidney disease, etc.

Extrinsic (non-kidney causes):
Dehydration, side effects of medicines, high-protein diet, excessive exercise, urinary blockage, etc.

Symptoms

High creatinine often shows no early symptoms, but as it increases, the following may appear:

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swelling in legs
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Reduced or foamy urine
  • Shortness of breath
  • Restlessness
  • High blood pressure
  • Pain in back or lower abdomen
  • Feeling of heaviness in the body

Main Causes

Diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney infections, medications (painkillers, antibiotics), dehydration, excessive protein intake, intense workouts, kidney stones or urinary blockage, reduced heart function, polycystic kidney disease.

Prevention Measures

Drink adequate water in a balanced manner, control blood sugar and blood pressure regularly, avoid painkillers, do light exercise daily, reduce stress, avoid smoking and alcohol, reduce salt and spices, and get regular urine and kidney function tests.
