🩺 Liver Abscess – Support Kit

1. Introduction

A Liver Abscess is a condition in which one or more cavities filled with pus develop inside the liver. It is caused by infection and can become life-threatening if not treated promptly.

The two most common types found in India are:

  • Amoebic Liver Abscess – Caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica.
  • Pyogenic Liver Abscess – Caused by bacteria such as E. coli, Klebsiella, or Streptococcus.

Other less common forms include:

  • Fungal Abscess (caused by organisms such as Candida)
  • Traumatic Abscess (occurring after injury or surgery)

2. Types

Amoebic Liver Abscess

  • Most common type in India.
  • Usually affects the right lobe of the liver.

Pyogenic Liver Abscess

  • Caused by bacterial infection.
  • More common in elderly individuals and those with weakened immunity.

Fungal Liver Abscess

  • Rare but may occur in severely immunocompromised individuals.

Traumatic/Post-Surgical Abscess

  • Develops due to infection following injury or surgery.

3. Symptoms

  • High or persistent fever
  • Pain or heaviness in the upper right abdomen
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes) in some cases
  • In severe cases, infection may spread throughout the body (sepsis)

4. Causes
